![]() Bio of Derek Mah I am a commercial illustrator and designer located in friendly Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Go Flames!
Classically educated in watercolour and pastel with an apprenticeship in old skool paste-up design (I'm out of D10's!) and a smattering of other media. Nowadays it's all about the Mac, of course. Themes and subject matter vary from rusty antiques to science fiction and fantasy images.
Other interests include playing music and programming computers. Back in my university days I was actually studying theoretical mathematics and computer programming (C before the plusses) and never quite escaped those interests.
Competing for space and food in our cozy home is another human, two cats and a rotating cast of hamsters, mice, and gerbils, all female. Their names are or have been Cari, Zoie, Zana, Ginny, Digger, Tigger, Fred, Holly, Rocky, Lilac II, Little Joe, Willow, Chipper, Cocoa, Mochaccino, Licorice, Digger Joe, Lilac, Misty, Lyric, Lacey and Joe. Yes, there are three Joe's in there. It's a thing. There are also about two dozen stuffed animals, but I won't name them here because I wouldn't want anyone to think I was weird...
A corner of the studio is dedicated to the computer. A Macintosh, naturally. Much energy has been wasted debating the supposed superiority of this or that hardware and software configuration. Having used both Windows and Macs with all sorts of page layout and graphics applications dating back to the original Apple ][+ (Penguin Graphics Magician, anyone?), I have only one thing to say:
I need more ram!!!
And that is about all I want to say about myself; too much of the web already reads like the Al Franken Decade.
